Digital Föreläsning - The Rise and Fall of Dutch Statesman Johan de Witt

Föreläsningen

Johan de Witt, whose 400th birthday was commemorated last year, is widely regarded to have been one of the most important statesmen in Dutch history. Yet after many years in public office he and his brother Cornelis in 1672 were gruesomely slaughtered by an angry mob in The Hague. In this lecture we will explore how Johan de Witt became so powerful in the 17th century Netherlands as well as why in the end he was so deeply hated by many of his countrymen.

Föreläsare

Arnout van Cruyningen lives in Wijchen, the Netherlands. He is an expert on the history of Europe's Royal Families and the institution of Monarchy, and the author of several books on the House of Oranje-Nassau and the history of the Netherlands, as well as a large number of articles and book reviews in national and international magazines.
