Föreläsningen

In 2026 it will be 400 years ago that Prince Willem II of Orange, grandson of William I ‘the Silent’ and father of Britain’s later King William III, was born in Den Haag. He was an impetuous and ambitious man, who fought during the final stage of the ‘Eighty Years War’ of the Dutch against the Spanish and from 1647 to his sudden death in 1650 he acted as Stadtholder of most of the United Provinces of the Netherlands. At age fourteen he married the eldest daughter of King Charles I of England. In this presentation we examine his short but eventful life and career, including Willem’s attempted coup d’etat in the Netherlands and his efforts to support his family in law, the embattled Stuarts in Britain.

The lecture is organized by Mårten Hougström in cooperation with Medborgarskolan.
