Om arrangemanget

Colombian freediver, Frank Pernett, introduces us to the world of freediving. He tells his personal story, how growing up close to the sea made freediving an important part of his life and how it led to his research on breath-hold diving physiology. The seminar is held in English using photos and videos.

The content of the seminar in Frank Pernetts own words:

"I will start by explaining how it started for me. Then I will explain, in very simple terms, using simple language, images, and videos, how the body adapts to the underwater environment: slowing the heart rate, saving oxygen, tolerating carbon dioxide, and responding to depth.

The final part of the seminar will connect freediving with the research that I'm doing and what I have found so far. I will present my research on breath-hold diving physiology, including oxygen desaturation, hyperventilation, hypoxia, and blackout risk.

I plan to include many pictures and videos instead of a lot of text, allowing participants to interrupt when ever they want".

/Frank B. Pernett, MD, PhD. Post-doctoral research fellow. Environmental Physiology Group. Mid Sweden University

Seminar in English

The seminar will be in English. The language will be accesible, visual, and easy to follow.

The aim is not only to learn about an amazing human activity, but also to practice English through a topic that combines personal experience, nature, medicine, and research.

Frank Pernett

Frank Pernett is a Colombian freediver, pulmonary medicine specialist, and researcher in breath-hold diving physiology. Actually, based in Östersund.

His research focuses on breath-hold diving physiology, including how the body manages oxygen during apnea, how hyperventilation affects safety, and why some freedivers may be more vulnerable to hypoxic blackout. He completed his doctoral thesis at Mid Sweden University on protective mechanisms and risk factors in serial freediving.
